For now, this solution to retirement assisted living is available only in Virginia. But we love the name. This is an idea for an assisted-living retiree and its Virginia-based creators of the MedCottage have nicknamed it a Granny Pod. It provides an independent detached structure… available in several variations… sized at only about 300 sq.ft.

We acknowledge that there’s no great solution for the medical needs of aging Boomers (and parents of Boomers) and the demands it puts on the entire family. But we like this idea for several reasons. For those who are able to remain with a family member rather than a hospital or long term care facility, a MedCottage Granny Pod is a viable alternative.
For one thing, the flexibility of the modular unit allows it to be assembled or disassembled in one’s back yard (providing zoning allows) or even inside a garage… anywhere there’s sewer/water hookup. It consists of a bedroom, bathroom, sitting area. and tiny kitchen. Computerized options can provide games or reminders for the retiree to take his/her meds. Hand rails, cord-free lighting, and other elderly adaptations are standard.
So if no one in your family is exactly excited about the prospect of an eventual nursing home room for a loved one … we think the creators of MedCottage are closing in on a great idea to keep the family nearby and avoid the cost of long term nursing care. In a loving environment, the MedCottage offers dignified long-term assisted care living.
